Horse Nettle (Solanum carolinense)

Horse Nettle (Solanum carolinense)

Solanums belong to the family Solanaceae as do tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant and nightshade.

This solanum produces a very poisonous fruit that looks like a small, yellowish tomato. Historically, these were fried in lard to make a paste for treating mange on horses.
